Oktober 2025 – Hydrogen from Ammonia in Fuel Cell Quality.

WS Reformer has achieved a significant milestone in small-scale reconversion of ammonia into pure hydrogen. On October, 1st the pilot plant, based on modular scalable, industrial components revealed hydrogen quality with less than 1ppm NH3. The new technologies significantly simplified the process.
Project leader Kartik Paghadal says: „Hundred – One – Zero. These are the ammonia levels in the gas between the individual process steps. While most people still speak about conversion rates of 99,9% in ammonia cracking, we clearly adress the purity challenge: Fuel cell grade hydrogen requires traces less than 0.1 ppm NH3 in hydrogen – that corresponds to 99,99997 % conversion !“
„Hundred“. The WSR technology for cracking is well established in steam reforming and allows to operate at high temperatures in order to achieve low ammonia levels of hundreds of ppm in the crack gas without the necessity of using expensive Ru-catalysts.
„One“. Together with our highly appreciated development partners from Hydrogen Mem-Tech, Norway we reached the one digit level in a relatively simple process scheme – essential for smale-scale plants.
„Zero. One“ purity level was demonstrated in the hydrogen product.
